About Stoke-on-Trent & The Area
Stoke-on-Trent, better known to locals as Stoke, is the sole city of the county of Staffordshire in England. The city is polycentric meaning it’s made up of a federation of six towns including Hanley, Burslem, Tunstall, Longton, and Fenton. Despite its largely urban landscape, Stoke also has incredible countryside thanks to its neighbouring nature reserves. Similar to other cities and towns in England, Stoke experiences a maritime climate, setting the perfect weather conditions for summer holidays.
Stoke caught its big break during the 17th century when it became the centre for industrial-scale pottery manufacturing. At some point, the city was referred to as “The Potteries” due to the large number of factories dedicated to earthenware production. It was also during this time that some of the most famous ceramic companies were founded including Royal Doulton, Dudson, Spode, Wedgwood, and Minton. After the construction of the Trent and Mersey Canals, china clay was imported from Cornwall and led the way for creamware and bone china.
The pottery tradition is still alive in Stoke today and is even one of the major attraction points for holidaymakers. Most of its ceramics collections are proudly displayed in many major art galleries across the city including the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery. In addition to ceramics, the city also has strong and vibrant arts and culture communities. Public art is prevalent in its main square along with its grand display of architecture. Stoke doesn’t shy away from its cuisine as well, so when you’re visiting, don’t forget to try out some delicious Staffordshire oatcakes!

Learn about history at the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery.
The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery is the go-to site if you want to learn more about the region’s pottery history. The museum has an amazing collection of decorative arts, archaeology, and natural history. Visitors are also encouraged to visit its galleries and admire some of Staffordshire’s best ceramic works and the largest display of metalworks. Feel like an actual Victorian at the Biddulph Grange Garden.

Located on the outskirts of Stoke, the estate is divided into garden rooms with each section displaying various species of flowers. Some of the most popular areas include the Chinese garden, the geological gallery, and the stumpery. There’s also a tea room where you can enjoy a fresh cup of tea and sandwiches!
Attend a pottery workshop at World of Wedgwood.
World of Wedgwood is another award-winning museum located at the heart of Staffordshire. The museum is dedicated to one of the most famous and oldest ceramic brands in England. It boasts an incredible selection of 3,000 artefacts and tools. You can also book educational tours where you can learn more about the original founder’s creative process. Check out the stunning views from Mow Cop Castle.
