About Grimsby & The Area
Grimsby, also known as Great Grimsby, is a port town nestled on the northern curve of the county of Lincolnshire. The town is one of the bigger settlements in the area, placing second to the city of Lincoln. Grimsby is defined by its busy docks with its coastline facing the River Humber’s estuary and the endless waters of the North Sea. Included in its list of neighbours are the villages and towns of Cleethorpes, Immingham, Humberston, and Hull. Grimsby also favours a coastal climate, boasting short bursts of warm weather throughout the summer.
Thanks to its coastal location, the town of Grimsby is most famous for its port. As early as the 20th century, the area was already a bustling port town and was the home of the world’s largest fishing fleet. Grimsby still holds one of the most important ports in England today, producing a large percentage of the country’s fishing industry. However, due to its stunning coastline and idyllic lifestyle, Grimsby is slowly transitioning into becoming a favourite resort town. Holidaymakers favour its noteworthy landmarks and attractions such as Cleethorpes Beach and the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre.
Things Do On Your Grimsby Hot Tub Break
Despite being a relatively small port town, Grimsby has plenty of exciting activities for holidaymakers. Start your day with a visit to the nearby beaches and docks. If you have the time, why not spend your afternoons in local art galleries or country parks? The town also has lots of unique attractions to satisfy each guest’s curiosity. Here are some of the best spots that Great Grimsby has to offer:
Learn local history at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre.
The Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre is one of the first interactive museums dedicated to England’s rich fishing history. Located in the centre of town, the museum is built on the old docks where guests can see firsthand how the locals process their catch. As you enter the museum, you’ll find lots of interesting displays explaining the different types of ships and equipment used for fishing. Some parts of the museum are also dedicated to mimicking the surroundings of 19th-century Grimsby. Visitors can even dress up in fishermen’s clothes and wander through the life-size dioramas of pubs and shops!
Stop by the oldest surviving trawler known as the Ross Tiger.
The Ross Tiger is the oldest surviving trawler in England. It was first entered into service in 1957 before retiring in 1984. Nowadays, the ship is permanently anchored at the Alexandra Dock and serves as an interactive museum. Visitors can climb aboard and explore the inner workings of the ship as well as learn the lives of the people who steered it. Aside from being a heritage centre, it’s important to note that the Ross Tiger is also a monument to fishermen who tragically passed away while on the job.
Visit the neighbouring sand dunes of Cleethorpes Beach.
Cleethorpes Beach is a strip of sand dunes found along the Humber Estuary. Compared to beaches in Grimsby, this patch of sand is quieter since it’s farther from the town centre. The beach itself stretches for at least four miles and when the tide goes out, you’ll find even more pools and mudflats. Families and friends often frequent the beach to soak in the sun, go for donkey rides, or have fun on paddleboards. However, there are also lots of features that can you explore. On one end of Cleethorpes, you’ll spot a collection of stumps which once belonged to an ancient sunken woodland!
