About Swanage & The Area

Swanage is a coastal town located in the eastern region of the Isle of Purbeck. In relation to the county of Dorset, the town rests on the southern tip, just below the town of Poole, with its coastline facing Swanage Bay. Swanage is also found in the middle of the Jurassic Coast which runs from Exmouth in Devon to Studland Bay in Dorset. The town is best known for its idyllic atmosphere and pleasant climate all year round.

Starting out as a small fishing port, the town of Swanage found its break during the Victorian era. During that time, the town expanded its economy from fishing to quarrying. One of its main exports was Purbeck marble which was a delicate material used for interior columns. Swanage was also the quarrying port for Purbeck limestone, a sturdy material commonly used for constructing stone houses. As the local market grew, more people moved to Swanage and built the town that people recognize today.

Once railways were introduced, Swanage bloomed into a holiday resort favoured by the Victorians. Guests quickly fell in love with its beautiful strip of beaches, far-reaching views, and charming coastal ambience. The town briefly paused as a tourist destination during the two world wars. After the town rebuilt itself from the damages of the war, it quickly picked up its pace as a seaside escape.

Swanage today still holds up to its title as a lovely holiday town. Many people, especially families, are drawn to its beautiful countryside and spacious beaches. When you add in its unique local attractions, it’s no surprise that visitors love to come back again and again!

Things To Do On Your Swanage Hot Tub Break

Swanage is a small town that’s full of big surprises. From the iconic rock formations in the north to the sprawling nature reserve in the south, there are many sights to see and plenty of things to do. Explorers can grab their maps and go fossil hunting along the Jurassic Coast. For a quiet rural retreat, the town offers an extensive outdoor park on its southern border. And if you’re ever in need of some sun, the local bay is always open to avid beachgoers. Here are other spots that you should visit the next time you’re in Swanage:

Explore the hidden gems along the Jurassic Coast.

Swanage is the perfect base for people who want to explore the Jurassic Coast. Stretching almost a hundred miles, this coastline covers the bays of Lyme Regis and Studland, with Swanage placed in the middle. The Jurassic Coast is a World Heritage Site and is famous for its incredibly rich geological history. Aside from fascinating layers of limestone and shale decorating the cliffsides, there are also countless pieces of fossils scattered across its shores. Visitors can book day tours and visit beautiful landmarks like Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. They can also search the coastline for historic souvenirs including ammonites, shells, and Jurassic reptiles!

Take a dip in the waters of Swanage Beach.

Swanage Beach is situated right at the heart of town with a long curve of sand and gentle waters. It’s an excellent location for classic bucket-and-spade holidays and is mostly frequented by families and their pets. There are plenty of options for renting deck chairs so that guests can soak in the summer sun and listen to the crashing waves. People looking for a slice of adventure will love the beach’s wide array of watersport activities. You can also rent out rowboats for a quick tour around the coast. And if you feel the familiar tingling of your stomach, the beach sits right across many of Swanage’s cafes and restaurants!

See the breathtaking views at the Old Harry Rocks.

If you have an extra day to spare, then you must visit the Old Harry Rocks. Located at the eastern tip of Studland, these natural chalk stalks are one of the most stunning formations in the region. The columns are a result of millions of years of erosion and weathering, leaving beautiful white walls and natural arches. The most prominent stack is called “Old Harry,” while the smaller stump next to it is referred to as its “wife.” There are many theories surrounding these formations, but it’s widely believed that they used to form one continuous cliff up to the Isle of Wight. Here’s an extra tip: try renting out a boat so that you can view the rocks from the best angle!

Spend an afternoon at Durlston Country Park.

Durlston Country Park is a massive outdoor park spanning over 320 acres. Nestling on the southern edges of Swanage, the park boasts a collection of habitats including grasslands, meadows, thickets, and sea cliffs. It’s an extremely popular tourist destination with tons of people visiting every year. There are multiple walking trails with gorgeous viewpoints across the park where can you admire the blue horizon. If you’re fond of wildlife, the park has hundreds of species of birds, insects, and woodland creatures. Visitors can also take a break in the park’s cafe and shop. If you’re visiting for the first time, don’t forget to take a picture in front of the park’s famous landmark – The Great Globe!

Experience the countryside through the Purbeck Way.

If you want to see more of the countryside, the Purbeck Way offers a magnificent tour of the southern coast. Starting from the pretty town of Wareham and finishing at Swanage’s Chapman’s Pool, this 15-mile walking route will take you along the area’s top local attractions. As you journey on the trail, you’ll be treated to spectacular views of rolling hills, wild meadows, and thriving woodlands. One highlight of the route is Corfe Castle, a medieval stronghold built upon the Purbeck Hills. While the walk stops at Swanage, you can actually extend it all the way to the Old Harry Rocks!
