About Torquay & The Area
Torquay is a coastal town in the southwestern part of England. Together with Paignton and Brixham, the trio forms the Torbay region of South Devon. The area is a mix of valleys and hills with patches of woodlands and cliffs near the coast. Like its nickname, Torquay mimics the style of Monte Carlo with high-rise buildings built on sloping hills facing the harbour. It’s a classic English seaside resort that’s quickly becoming a go-to tourist destination.
Despite its humble beginnings, Torquay actually played many significant roles throughout history. During ancient times, Roman soldiers often visited its cave systems and left offerings on the rock formations of Kents Cavern. At the height of World War II, the town proved to be a safe haven for evacuees from London. And when the 1948 Summer Olympic Games were held in the UK, Torquay’s coastline played host to watersport events like sailing and yachting.
However, It’s important to know that there’s more to this coastal town than its surf and sand. In fact, Torquay is home to famous artists and writers. The acclaimed writer, Agatha Christie, was born in Torquay and lived there up until her marriage. Most of her novels are also set in her hometown. The town streets also served as a canvas for Bristol-based artist, Banksy, who allegedly painted a mural of a child and a robot.
