About Exeter & The Area

Exeter is a cathedral city located in the southwest region of England. The original town was built on the banks of the River Exe while the adjacent valleys transformed into the city most now known as Exeter. Bordered by Plymouth and Bristol, Exeter is considerably smaller than its neighbouring cities. However, it’s not to be underestimated! According to its official site, Exeter is “a small city that packs a big punch.”

Due to its geographical location, Exeter doesn’t have the same features as other coastal towns, but it does boast an incredibly rich history. During the Middle Ages, the town was considered a religious centre, so the townsfolk built multiple places of worship with most of them still standing today. As the economy improved through trade, the town grew and became known for its local products such as wool.

Unfortunately, Exeter didn’t fare well after two world wars. During the 1950s, a large part of the city was rebuilt, replacing many of its trademark red sandstone buildings with modern housings. On the flip side, the new and improved city brought on waves of people coming from all sectors of education, business, and most importantly, tourism.

Stepping into the city centre, Exeter is like a place that has stopped its time. There’s a fascinating mix of buildings from different eras all set within a present-day backdrop. However, it’s exactly these many unique architecture and long-standing history that attract visitors to the area. If you’re a big fan of history, then Exeter should be at the top of your list!

Things To Do On Your Exeter Hot Tub Break

Spending a single day in Exeter isn’t enough to cover all of its stunning spots. From age-old churches to cobblestoned streets, there are plenty of nooks and crannies worth exploring. Add in its interesting and quirky history and you’ll never want to leave. Need some pointers? To start, here are some historical places in Exeter that you must absolutely visit:

Visit the historic Exeter Cathedral.

The first stop on your list should be a visit to Exeter Cathedral. This impressive church dates back to the 12th century and was actually completed only 300 years later! Aside from being incredibly old, it also holds the record for the longest unbroken vaulted ceiling in the world. The cathedral is a magnificent piece of architecture and something that you should truly see for yourself!

See the world’s narrowest street – Parliament Street.

Speaking of world records, did you know that the narrowest street in the world is in Exeter? Yes! Only measuring 64 inches across, Parliament Street was first built in the 1300s. It was originally named “Small Lane,” but was aptly renamed in irony as a protest. While there really isn’t much to look at, it’s still a fun spot to check off your list!

Go on an adventure at the Haldon Forest Park.

Located on the southern outskirts of Exeter are the thriving woodlands of Haldon Forest Park. Reaching over 3,500 acres of pine, the park is littered with walking and biking trails for curious explorers. There’s also an activity trail made for youngsters and the young-at-heart. An onsite cafe is also available in case you want to take a quick bite.

Explore the town’s ancient underground passages.

Here’s another interesting fact about Exeter: they have medieval underground passages. Running throughout the city, these passages have served many purposes. They were said to be used during wars and sieges. At one time, the paths were used to bring clean drinking water. Luckily, you don’t have to venture out alone because there are guided tours with even fun interactive displays!

Relive history with a visit to Cathedral Close.

Cathedral Close is located at the very heart of Exeter and is one of the city’s oldest areas, even dating back to Roman times. Along the way, you’ll see plenty of buildings with architectural designs from the medieval period. However, the street’s crown jewel is definitely Mol’s Coffee House which was built in 1596. It still exists today with all of its exteriors intact.

Stroll along the grounds of Rougemont Gardens.

If you’re feeling laidback, try visiting the gardens of Rougemont Castle. The park is spacious with lots of room for picnics and other outdoor activities. It’s also considered to be the oldest public open space in England. When you have the time, the castle itself is an interesting sight to see with over 950 years of history.

Open a treasure trove of history at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum.

First opened in 1868, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum was built as a practical memorial to Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband. The museum itself is a gorgeous sight with its Gothic Revival architecture. As you go inside, you’ll find multiple galleries and exhibitions showcasing collections of art, antiquities, natural history, and culture. Definitely a must-see for those who love art and history!
