About Croyde & The Area
Croyde is a fishing village located on the western tip of Devon in England. Nestled in between hills, the area is marked by Putsborough Beach on the north and Saunton Sands on the south. Croyde Stream also runs through the village centre and joins Bristol Channel from the bay. In spite of its relatively remote location, Croyde is a beloved holiday resort with easy access to neighbouring towns like Braunton and Barnstaple.
Unlike other coastal towns, Croyde played a much quieter role throughout history until World War II. During the war, the village provided ample space for the army to practise their manoeuvers for the Normandy landings. The nearby beach of Saunton Sands also proved to be an efficient training ground. After the war ended and the 1950s rolled in, Croyde quickly reverted back to its holiday resort status.
Over the past several years, the village has drawn more holidaymakers with its addition of campsites and holiday parks. Nowadays, Croyde still retains its title as a favourite getaway destination with its most visited attraction being its harbour and adjacent beach. When you add in its laidback lifestyle, this western coast of Devon is the total package for the best summer escape!
Things To Do On Your Croyde Hot Tub Break
Croyde may be a small village, but it definitely has its fill of stunning locations. From Croyde’s very own bay to the nearby town of Barnstaple, you won’t run out of things to do or sights to see. Guests who are visiting Croyde for the first time will discover that there’s a lot to love about this beautiful coastal spot. Check out this list of must-see locations to help navigate your weekend break through North Devon:
Walk the shoreline of Croyde Bay Beach.
When in town, visiting Croyde Bay Beach should be at the top of your list! Located at the heart of Croyde village, this beach spans the entire harbour with its golden sand dunes. The bay’s waters are in perfect condition for surfing, while the beachfront is popular among holidaying families. Croyde Stream also cuts into the sand before it connects to the ocean, making shallow pools for kids. And if you want to get a better view of the coast, don’t hesitate to join other walkers on the South West Coast Path running along the village edges!
Enjoy camping by the sea on Putsborough Beach.
Another award-winning beach to rival Woolacombe is Croyde’s very own Putsborough Beach. The beach covers at least three miles, starting from Putsborough and ending in Mortehoe. Most visitors gather at the corner of Baggy Point’s headland, where the beach forms a gentle cradle. The beach is best known for its inviting waters and thriving rock pools. Perfect for families and solo travellers alike, Putsborough is located farther from the town centre, so prepare an afternoon for this adventure. Farther also means quieter which is ideal for a relaxing holiday!
Hike up to see the coast at Baggy Point.
Baggy Point is a long headland separating Croyde Bay from Morte Bay and providing a stunning vantage point of the coast. The good news is that it also connects with the South West Coast Path, so there’s a nature trail that walkers and hikers can follow. You can join the trail from Croyde Beach and trace the coast until you reach the hilly area of Baggy Point. The location is also considered an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so you can expect a gorgeous country setting and a variety of wildlife!
Surf the waves at the famous Saunton Sands.
Located just south of Croyde is the famous Saunton Sands. If you’ve never seen this beach before, you’ve probably seen its cameo in many films including Tom Cruise’s “Edge of Tomorrow.” Saunton’s spacious beachfront is the ideal location for group holidays and events. Meanwhile, the rough waves provide a challenge for seasoned surfers. The beach is open all year, so feel free to pop in anytime. Another great thing about Saunton Sands is that it’s very pet-friendly so your furry companion can always tag along!
Explore the estuary at Crow Point.
Crow Point is an estuary in Braunton that’s within driving distance from the village of Croyde. It’s highly recommended to take out a day from your holiday and spend it on this stunning beachfront. What’s unique about Crow Point’s estuary is that it’s joined by two different rivers, River Taw and River Torridge. This combination of rivers makes for unpredictable tides and interesting geographical layouts. Guests are welcome to trek the fine shoreline and enjoy the sights of crystal blue waters and lush grasslands.
Visit the picturesque town of Braunton.
While you’re at Crow Point, why not take out the time to visit the town of Braunton? Since Braunton is bigger than Croyde, it has more local shops, pubs, and supermarkets where you can refill your supplies before heading back to the village. The town is also rich in history with several heritage sites and age-old architecture. For a quick history lesson, you can visit the Braunton Museum and check out its working model railway!
Relive local history at the Museum of Barnstaple.
Placed right next to Braunton is another town called Barnstaple. It’s England’s oldest borough and one of the biggest towns in North Devon. Like its next-door neighbour, Barnstaple highlights its local history and showcases it through the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon. True to its name, the museum dedicates its mission to the recording and retelling of stories from the people and places of Devon. It’s open almost every day and you can visit the exhibitions for free!
