About Penzance & The Area

Penzance is one of the many seaside towns dotting the inner coast of West Cornwall. The town is also known as “Pensanns” in the Cornish language. This means “holy headland,” referring to the location of St. Anthony’s chapel. Although no physical structure of the chapel remains, it’s believed to have been built on the land where Penzance’s harbour now stands.

When it comes to topography, Penzance is generally hilly with many cliffside sceneries and dramatic drops. Unlike other coastal spots, the town itself doesn’t have beaches, but it does have a long stretch of the bay, also known as the promenade. The town is also anchored by the harbour where you can see St. Michael’s Mount from the docks.

What Penzance lacks in beaches, it makes up for history. The town dates back as far as the Iron Age. One of the earliest buildings ever built in Penzance was the Lescudjack Castle. In its glory days, this Norman castle covered at least three acres of the town’s centre. Sadly, like the chapel, no structural evidence remains, but what’s left is a generous mound with a great view of the town below.

During the Victorian era, Penzance was known more as a regional centre rather than a seaside resort. For instance, the Royal Geological Society of Cornwall was established in the town during the early 19th century. With the creation of railway stations, Penzance became more like a terminal town, where people pass by to get from one point to another. That being said, it didn’t stay like that for very long.

Nowadays, Penzance boasts itself of being a historical holiday resort, where people can escape the city noise, and soak up the sun or listen to local stories. For people in search of a hidden coastal gem for their weekend getaway, Penzance should be at the top of the list!

Things To Do On Your Penzance Hot Tub Break

Never underestimate a town by its size! The same thing can be said for Penzance. When it comes to fun under the sun, the options are limitless. Explore the village streets and admire the architecture. Dip your toes in the Jubilee Pool or Long Rock Beach. If you have an extra day to spare, why not go out to view the beautiful landmarks? Penzance has tons to offer, so the next time you pass by this coast town, don’t forget to check these out:

Explore the unique architecture at Chapel Street

Chapel Street is a long iconic street right at the heart of Penzance. It’s decorated with an eclectic mix of architecture and features many shops selling art, antiques, or gifts. There’s also a handful of spots worth visiting like The Turks Head, which is the oldest pub in town.

The Branwell House where the Bronte sisters’ mother used to live is located on this street as well. For literary references, there’s the Admiral Benbow pub which Robert Louis Stevenson references in Treasure Island. Lastly, don’t forget to pay a visit to the Egyptian House, built in 1835 as a tribute to the British Empire.

Admire the art collection at Penlee House Gallery & Museum

The Penlee House is a Victorian house that was converted into a gallery and museum. Originally built in 1865, the house itself is full of history and aims to conserve the art and culture of west Cornwall. Included in the gallery’s permanent collection are artworks from Newlyn artists. The museum also hosts seasonal workshops where anyone can learn about fine art and history. And once you’re finished touring the inside, you can explore the gardens or have tea at the Orangery Cafe.

Dive into the biggest saltwater pool – the Jubilee Pool

Another gorgeous location that’s worth visiting is the Jubilee Pool, the largest seawater lido in the UK. It was opened in 1935 which is the same year as King George V’s Silver Jubilee. Considered an art deco masterpiece, the pool was built around a traditional bathing spot near the harbour. Despite the damage caused by storms, the area is well-maintained and is one of the best structures of its time.

Enjoy the breeze and plays at the Minack Theatre

The Minack Theatre is an open-air theatre overlooking the cliffside. Aside from the spectacular view, the stage and steps are made of beautiful granite rocks and set in classic Greek style. Although it looks like a historical site, it’s actually a working theatre and produces at least 20 plays per season. During the peak season, as many as 80,000 people can visit the theatre per year, so it’s always better to book in advance, just in case!

Have fun swimming at Long Rock Beach

If you’re feeling sunny, you can always pay a visit to Long Rock Beach. Located in the neighbouring town of Longrock, it’s a long strip of golden sand and pebbles with plenty of room for shallow waters. This makes it perfect for families who want to go swimming or windsurfing. It’s also one of the few beaches that’s pet-friendly all year round, so don’t forget to bring your dog along!
