About Looe & The Area

Looe is a fishing village established in the southeast region of Cornwall. It also goes by its Cornish name, “Logh” which means “deep water inlet.” Its name accurately depicts the town’s geographical description. Bordered between Portlooe and Millendreath, the River Looe cuts through the middle of the village, separating it into two areas – East Looe and West Looe. Both East and West Looe share a singular bridge and an estuary which navigates boats into the harbour.

The cottages surrounding Looe are perched on hilltops with rocky cliffs. Although there are fewer beaches than there are houses, the town compensates with its gorgeous country backdrop.

When it comes to their features, East Looe and West Looe have their own characteristics. East Looe revolves its community around its sandy beaches such as East Looe Beach and Plaidy Beach. The east side of town acts as the “centre” and it’s where you’ll find most museums, landmarks, and historical buildings. Meanwhile, West Looe’s charm lies in its architecture and quaint streets. You’ll also discover the best shops, eateries, and lodges on the west side of town.

Compared to other coastal villages, Looe is extremely old, with evidence suggesting inhabitants as far back as the Neolithic period. Throughout the years, locals thrived on fishing and trading, and even by medieval standards, the town was steadily booming. Unfortunately, the town’s fortunes declined after the Napoleonic Wars. The destruction of the area made it impossible to conduct business and subsequent floods didn’t help.

Looe got back on its feet during the 19th century when the village transformed into a seaside resort. The Victorians loved holidaying and dubbed the west’s Talland Bay as the “playground of Plymouth.” Boats around the harbour increased and business roared once again. Soon enough, hotels, cafes, and gift shops started appearing across town to cater to new visitors.

Despite its status as a tourism town, Looe has retained its humble village beginnings with the community remarkably unchanged. The place’s mixture of charming and adventurous is what appeals to most people and why many of them consider Looe as their home from home.

Things To Do On Your Looe Hot Tub Break

Looe is a treasure trove of adventures. From casual days at the beach to planning a trip to a nearby island, you’ll be able to fill your schedule nonstop! This coastal town is a combination of relaxing and exciting, so brighten up your holiday by adding these fun activities to your list:

Take a leisurely stroll down East Looe Beach.

You don’t have to go very far to experience the salty waters. East Looe Beach is located right at the tip of East Looe and is favoured among families looking for some fun under the sun. Build sandcastles on the sandy coast or dip your toes in the cool shallow waters. You can even go crab-fishing by the nearby harbour walks. And on the side, you can see Banjo Pier and watch the boats pass through the estuary.

Read up on local history at Old Guildhall Museum and Gaol.

The Old Guildhall Museum and Gaol, also known as the Looe Museum, is a local museum showcasing the town’s rich and colourful history. From its humble start as a fishing village to its secret smuggling trade, there are plenty of stories here to satisfy any history buff. Their exhibits also include vintage toys, prized porcelain, and military regalia. Even the building itself is worth checking out. The museum is still housed in its original structure which dates back five centuries and includes the actual prison cells!

Enjoy the scenic views at Trenant Wood.

Want to surround yourself with nature? There’s no better place than Trenant Wood. This woodland paradise is on the outskirts of Looe but is definitely worth the drive. The peninsula is home to a thriving ecosystem which includes many species of birds, insects, and reptiles. Feel free to challenge yourself on the park’s walking trails or simply observe the flowing waters of River Looe. If you want peace and quiet, this is the place to be!

Hike up the South West Coast Path.

The South West Coast Path which travels throughout Cornwall also passes through Looe. Gear up for the day and enjoy the trail from Looe to Talland, and finally, Polperro. On the way, you’ll be graced with magnificent views of the harbour and the coastline. There are also interesting heritage sites to treat the eyes and the mind. Plus, you can bring your furry friend along! Once you reach Polperro, catch the bus back to Looe and make it in time for supper.

Set out on an adventure trip to Looe Island.

If you’re planning ahead, why not set out on a visit to Looe Island? Located a mile from the coastline, Looe Island is a marine nature reserve stretching out to nine hectares of land. Despite its small size, there are tons of things to do once you get there. You can go on an educational tour, observe the growing wildlife, or even stay the night in a bell tent. The trip requires extra time and steps though, so make sure to schedule beforehand!
