Best Places To Stay On Your Brecon Beacons Hot Tub Break
There’s more to Brecon Beacons than just beautiful landscapes. In fact, there are numerous towns dotted along the borders that are worth visiting! Each place comes with its own stories and quirks, wonderfully showcasing Wales’ rich history. If you’re visiting for the first time, you’re probably wondering how or where to start! Luckily, you’ve got this handy list guiding you to all the best places:
Abergavenny is a market town located six miles from England’s border. It’s aptly named the “Gateway to Wales,” making it an extremely popular spot for travellers and tourists. While the town has its fair share of stunning views and compelling history, most people frequent the area for its delicious food and vibrant culture. Every day, the town hall hosts various fairs and markets ranging from antiques to local produce. Abergavenny also hosts an annual food festival which has over a hundred exhibitors and spans several venues!
Brecon is another market town situated in the northern part of Brecon Beacons. The town lies at the heart of the national park with the River Usk and River Honddu cutting through the area and converging at the town centre. Due to this geographical layout, Brecon is known for being a charming riverside town with its own promenade, Canal Basin. Adding to its charm are Brecon’s cultural sites. Tourists are welcome to visit the historic Brecon Cathedral or learn more about local lore through the town’s art galleries and museums.
Crickhowell is a cosy town built upon the banks of the River Usk near Abergavenny. Located next to an abundance of water and fertile soil, Crickhowell is famous for its organic and eco-friendly products. The town is also fiercely independent, strongly defending its roots with its promotion of local produce. It’s the best place to visit if you want to restock holiday supplies before heading out for your next adventure. Visitors are also fond of the ancient Crickhowell Bridge with its interesting design and history.
Hay-on-Wye is a tightly-knit town located on the western border of Wales and England. Thanks to its unique position, the town is usually a transitional point for seasonal tourists, making it a very busy spot during the summers. Hay-on-Wye is also known for its thriving book community. Boasting over 20 bookshops, the place is every bibliophile’s heaven with multiple shops dedicated to different genres and specialities. It’s also the location of the annual Hay Festival, cheekily comparable to a literary Woodstock.
Llangorse is a small village just east of Brecon where you’ll also find Llangorse Lake, the biggest body of water in Wales. With its vast and gentle surface, it’s the go-to place for all watersport activities in Brecon Beacons. There’s also a nearby activity centre where you can participate in other adrenaline-pumping ventures. At night, Llangorse is the perfect spot for stargazing. The sky lights up with stars, reflecting upon the waters and setting a truly romantic atmosphere!
Merthyr Tydfil is a bustling town located on the outskirts of Brecon Beacons. It’s best known for its collection of Welsh poets and writers including Leslie Norris and Glyn Jones. Also nicknamed, “Waterfall Country,” the town consists of grand waterscapes with equally stunning trails around the region. Its most prized attraction is the Sgwd-y-Eira, a curtain waterfall with a footpath behind the cascading waters where you can pose and take pictures!
Talgarth is located on the north border of Brecon Beacons. Despite its relatively smaller area, the town is steeped in history and rich in wildlife. Across Talgarth, you’ll find notable heritage sites including a 14th-century defensive tower and a long cairn dating back to the Neolithic period. Pwll-y-Wrach Reserve is also located within the area and is considered a site of special interest. The reserve is a mix of rare plant species and exquisite bluebells, creating a truly captivating landscape for any traveller.
Talybont-on-Usk is a modest village located only a mile away from the River Usk and Talybont Reservoir. However, this quaint place shouldn’t be underestimated! The village boasts gorgeous countryside views with its own forest trail running through the centre and touring visitors along the lakeside. The reservoir is also popular amongst enthusiasts, with frequent sights of canoes and boats on the waters. During the nighttime, the Milky Way can be seen from Talybont, making it an ideal location for stargazers!
Usk is located right outside of Brecon Beacons and is famously known as the “Town of Flowers.” With vast gardens and local parks, there’s no denying the beauty that is Usk! Aside from its splendid display of flowers, the town is also a great fishing spot because it’s right next to the similarly-named, River Usk. Fellow anglers will recommend dropping by from May to June if you want to catch some fresh salmon. You can also tour Usk’s historic trail which will take you to more than 20 historical sites across town!
